In America, they take two years to teach you walk and talk, and spend the rest of your life telling you to sit down and shut up.
In Singapore, they take two years to teach you walk and talk, and spend the next 15 telling you to sit down and shut up.
Then when you turn 17 or 18 suddenly you have to form opinions and ideas of your own, after more than a decade of listening and living by someone else's.
So it's a conundrum when the teachers try to get you to stand up and talk,
your mates try to get you to sit down and shut up,
and we opinion-formers get stuck in the middle.
